According to a recent report on Indian educational statistics, the gross enrollment ratio, or GER, of students in secondary school is about 80 percent, which is fairly good. But there are many instances of students dropping out after Class 8. To reduce the dropout among students in secondary and higher secondary schools, the Government of India and a number of private organizations have introduced multiple school scholarships for academically meritorious students. These deserving students face financial crises and are at risk of dropping out of school, but they can take advantage of these scholarships to keep their academic dreams alive and well.

Here are a few of the top scholarships for Class 9 and 10 students:

Pre-Matric Scholarship for Students with Disabilities. This scholarship was introduced to help support the academic journey of students with disabilities. The scholarship is meant for students with disabilities in Class 9 or 10 in a government or recognized school. Any and all students with more than 40 percent disability and a certificate to prove their disability are allowed to apply for this scholarship. The annual income of the student’s family should be less than Rs 2.50 lakh from all income sources. The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disability, Government of India offers this scholarship for physically challenged students in Class 9 and 10. The scholarship award includes a maintenance allowance, book grant and disability allowance, and the application deadline is typically between June and November.

Pre-Matric Scholarships Scheme for Minorities. This scholarship is intended to help support the school journey of children belonging to minority communities, including Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, Buddhists, Jains and Zoroastrians or Parsis. Students who are studying in Class 1 through Class 10 can take advantage of the benefits of this scholarship. They need to have gained at least 50 percent marks in their previous exam. And the annual income of the student’s family must be less than Rs 1 lakh per year from all income sources. The Ministry of Minority Affairs, Government of India offers this scholarship to minority community students in Class 1 through Class 10. The scholarship award includes an admission fee, a tuition fee and maintenance allowance, and the application deadline for the scholarship is between June and November.

National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme. The merit-cum-means scholarship intends to help support the studies of Class 9 students who have earned at least 55 percent marks or an equivalent grade in the Class 8 exam. The purpose of the scholarship is to offer financial assistance to academically meritorious students who come from low-income families. The scholarship recipients are selected based on the selected test conducted nationwide by each state. To appear for the test, the students or applicants must have gained at least 55 percent markets or an equivalent grade in the Class 7 exam. The annual income of the student’s family must be less than Rs 1.50 lakh from all income sources. The Department of School Education and Literacy, Government of India offers this scholarship to Class 9 students who have scored 55 percent or higher in Class 7 and Class 8 exams. The award is about Rs 12,000 per year, and the application deadline for the scholarship is between June and November.

Begum Hazrat Mahal National Scholarship for Minorities Girls. Academically meritorious girls belonging to minority communities can take advantage of the benefits of this scholarship. The main purpose of the scholarship is to provide tuition fee assistance to academically meritorious students who are unable to pay for their education because of financial difficulties. They must be in Class 9 through Class 12 and should have earned at least 50 percent marks or higher in the previous class. The annual income of the student’s family should not be higher than Rs 2 lakh per year from all income sources. The Maulana Azad Education Foundation, also known as MAEF, of the Ministry of Minority Affairs, Government of India offers this scholarship to girls in Class 9 through Class 12. The scholarship award is up to Rs 6,000, and the application deadline is between September and October.

SOF Girl Child Scholarship Scheme (GCSS). This scholarship scheme seeks to help offer financial assistance to girls from low-income families to help support them through their academic journey. Girls studying in Class 1 through Class 10 can apply for this scholarship scheme. They must have earned at least 60 percent marks in their previous class, and the combined monthly income of the student’s parents must be less than Rs 15,000. The Science Olympiad Foundation offers this scholarship to girls from Class 1 through Class 10. The scholarship award is Rs 5,000, and the application deadline is between April and October.

Swami Dayanand School Scholarship for Delhi/NCR. This scholarship scheme is only available to students of the Delhi/NCR region. Academically meritorious students who come from low-income families can receive benefits under this scholarship scheme. Students who are studying in Class 9 through Class 12 in a government or private school recognized by the CBSE board are allowed to apply for this scholarship. They must have secured at least 50 percent marks in the previous exam. The gross annual income of the student’s family should be less than Rs 2 lakh per year from all income sources. The Swami Dayanand Education Foundation offers this scholarship to all Class 9 through Class 12 students of the CBSE board. The scholarship award is up to Rs 5,000 per year, and the application deadline for the scholarship is between June and December.

National Scholarship Exam (NSE). The National Scholarship Exam, also known as the NSE, is organized by the National Institute of Career Education or NICE Foundation. The foundation aims to identify and nurture any and all talented students and help them discover their areas of strength and weakness. The scholarship exam is an excellent way for Class 5 to 12 students to both test their knowledge and win wonderful cash prizes. Class 5 to 12 students, as well as diploma and degree students are eligible for the scholarship exam. The benefits include cash prizes up to INR 35,000, and the application deadline is between August and September.

Bose Einstein Scholarship Test. The JMMC Research Foundation organizes the Bose-Einstein Scholarship Test regularly in order to reward students with monthly scholarships. The participating students that perform well in the scholarship test get exposure to workshops, seminars and research based products. All Class 7 to graduating students are eligible, and the benefits include scholarships worth INR 36,000 per year. The application deadline is between April and May.

Vidyadhan Scholarship for 10th Passed Students. The Vidyadhan Scholarship for 10th Passed Students is one of the most common scholarships for Class 10 students, run by the Sarojini Damodaran Foundation (SDF). The foundation offers a financial scholarship to academically talented students after they complete Class 10. The Vidyadhan scholarship is offered to over 1,500 students each year across states that include Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Students chosen for the Vidyadhan Scholarship can receive up to INR 6,000 each year for Class 11 and Class 12. Students who score 90 percent marks or above in their Class 10 results are eligible for the scholarship if their family income is less than two lakhs per year.
